Stage One
The Full Light
Ages 8–9 & under
Tanner Stage I — Prepubescent
No signs of puberty. The body is at rest in childhood — hormones quiet, growth steady. This is the baseline from which everything unfolds.
Energetic Quality
Full of light. Unguarded, playful, and wholly present — this is the child at her most radiant, moving through the world without self-consciousness, belonging entirely to herself.

Stage Two
The First Dimming
Ages 9–11
Tanner Stage II — Early Puberty Begins
Breast budding begins. Pubic hair may appear. A small growth spurt begins. Estrogen starts rising quietly beneath the surface.
Energetic Quality
Something is shifting and she can feel it, even if she cannot name it. Confusion and tenderness arrive together — a holding-on to childhood, a sense that the familiar is slowly, gently loosening.

Third Quarter
Stage Three
The Turn
Ages 11–13
Tanner Stage III — Mid Puberty
Breasts continue to develop. Pubic and underarm hair thickens. The body curves. Acne may begin. This is often the most physically noticeable stage of change.
Energetic Quality
Big feelings with few words for them yet — outbursts, tenderness, withdrawal. She is half in childhood, half somewhere new. Mood swings come like weather. She is learning her own interior for the first time.

Waning Crescent
Stage Four
The Becoming
Ages 12–14
Tanner Stage IV — Late Puberty
Body shape continues to mature. Menstruation may begin. Hormones are more established, though still calibrating.
Energetic Quality
The world outside grows louder. Peers become mirrors — she watches how others move, dress, belong. Identity begins to separate from family. Feelings of desire, intimacy, and self-expression emerge. Emotional regulation slowly, steadily arrives.

Stage Five
The New Moon
Ages 14–16
Tanner Stage V — Menarche & Full Maturity
Adult body composition reached. Regular menstruation established. The infradian rhythm begins — the inner clock that will guide her cycle for decades to come.
Energetic Quality
The new moon holds everything in potential. She has arrived — not at an ending, but at the beginning of her cycle. She is ready to begin listening to herself in an entirely new way.
